  5. This application is intended to allow you to upgrade the various applications
  6. within your Acornet suite, before they are made available as part of an
  7. "official" Acornet upgrade.  Using this application is preferable to simply
  8. copying a new version over the old one for two reasons:
  9.  
  10. (a) The Acornet Upgrader "knows" about the applications and avoids
  11. overwriting any files within an application which contain your configuration
  12. and preferences.  Thus you should not need to reconfigure the application
  13. following an upgrade.
  14.  
  15. (b) If any files are overwritten by the upgrade, the previous versions are
  16. saved within a directory !Acornet.Old.[datestamp] where [datestamp] is a
  17. string of digits representing the date and time you ran the upgrader.  So,
  18. even if something goes wrong with the upgrade process, you ought to be able
  19. to restore the status quo without too much trouble - provided you know what
  20. you are doing.
  21.  
  22. Caveats
  23. -------
  24. (1) Obviously, I'm not psychic and have no way of knowing how the various
  25. software authors may change the internal structure of their applications in
  26. the future, invalidating the assumptions that have been made by this
  27. upgrader.  Hence your use of this facility is entirely at your own risk.
  28.  
  29. (2) Because the old versions of files are saved, an increasing amount of disk
  30. space will be consumed by applying upgrades.  When you are happy that an
  31. upgrade has been successful, you can simply delete !Acornet.Old and
  32. everything within it.
